“The Times They Are a’ Changing”

Have you ever noticed how change makes us feel uneasy? It’s surprising it does. We live in a world of change and what is more, we cope amazingly well. The people of Trinity are somewhat “old hands” at adapting to change. For example, we’ve pretty much grown used to the contemporary service and its variations, inclusive language is “old hat,” and we quite like some of the new spiritual songs. In fact, we barely notice those things now - that is, until we pause to reflect on “how things used to be” and things aren’t the same as they used to be at Trinity!

Change is afoot. Rev. Jim is going on a sabbatical for 3 months this fall. What’s worse, he’s going just when Lori Crocker has left Trinity to assume a new pastoral charge! A few of us are looking around for a “life” jacket and searching for solid ground. It feels like our ship is without a captain. Who will steer the ship and keep us on an even keel? Who will know the safe passage to calm water?

Well, here is some good news. A number of people have been working behind the scenes to make sure we do have a safe passage and sail on calm water.
•	Rev. Jim is working diligently, as always, and he will be here until he begins his vacation on August 1st.
•	During the months of May, June, and July, student minister, Bonnie Fraser is working with us.
•	Sheila is back in the office or “Command Central,” as some of us think of it.
•	Our own Emma Lee Stewart is the new Contemporary

Planning for the future, Trinity Council oversaw the formation of 2 vital committees. The first, under Pictou Presbytery’s direction and supervision, is the Joint Needs Assessment Committee (JNAC). Its mandate is to study not only our church needs but also the area in which we live, to develop a “profile” of who we are. Once we have that profile completed, we will have a much better idea of what kind of ministry is required at Trinity in 2009 and looking forward.

The second committee is an ad hoc committee whose mandate is twofold:
•	To find and hire a weekend-supply clergy person to work with us during Jim’s Sabbatical
•	To find an interim minister for the period of time needed to complete the “Joint Needs Assessment.” To that end, Rev. Arlene Riches will begin work with us on August 1st, for a period of 6 months, at which time we will have a better idea of the direction in which the congregation wishes to move.

Notice the terms we are using? We have said “looking forward” and “the direction we wish to move.” Yes, we will be looking ahead. It doesn’t make sense to just repeat what we have done before. We must build on our past. Foundations not covered with a solid structure, are known to crumble.

What an opportunity Trinity has right now! Put on your thinking cap and start asking: “What if?” Think of the possibilities. Some of the most exciting thinking and dialogue is taking place in study groups in churches all across the country. What if Trinity absolutely packed the house with enthusiastic thinkers and talkers? Trinity is a living, breathing entity. The source of its vitality is in us, the living spirit working in and through us.

So, let go of that lifejacket. Be thankful for what has been but allow yourself to get excited about what is yet to come. We will sail through these waters, navigating the rougher parts skillfully, caring for those with less seaworthy stomachs, and providing opportunity for the more daring souls to learn new sea or “spirit- faring” skills. We have embarked on a journey of transition, one that is guaranteed to widen our horizons and has great potential to enrich our faith. Change can be good. Let’s embrace it.
